Tuesday, August 3 ... Leaving Norfolk
It really hasn't sunk in yet that this is our last day of this leg of our 'big adventure' ... we started in Fernandina Beach, FL and will end at Salt Ponds Marina in Hampton, VA. We'll have to get out a whole new set of maps when we set off to explore the Cheaspeake.
Goodbye to Greg and Janice .. our first buddy-boaters!
Anchors up at 8:30.
Goodbye to Norfolk with all your BIG ships!
Our first submarine sighting!
Navy Escort came up and told us to 'move away' from the sub.
This tanker gave us our first radio call reporting that we were on a collision course! That got the adrenaline flowing!
After all the commotion in the Norfolk Harbor, it was a real relief to get out of the channel and enter the Chesapeake Bay. After seeing depths of 80-90 ft in the Norfolk channel, it was a bit of a shock to see the depth sounder showing 17ft in the bay.
We arrived at Salt Ponds Marina around 1pm and picked out a slip at the dock to be our home for the month of August. From here, we have easy access to the Chesapeake Bay. And they have a pool, which is a welcome addition since the hot temps are back. Our plans for the month include boat projects, Dan will be going to FL to oversee his mom's post-hospital rehab, I'm going to Loveland, Ohio to see Michelle's new home, and we sincerely hope to enjoy some great sailing in the Chesapeake Bay.
Now its time to break out the martinis!
Totals for our trip:
- 870 miles since leaving BLM (includes our offshore sail to Cumberland Island and Fernandina Beach, FL)
- 715 miles on the ICW (starting at St Simons Inlet, GA)
- 182 gallons of diesel
- 128 engine hours
- 1.42 gal per hour
- 4.78 miles per gal

Who would have thought the suburban would be more fuel efficient.
